There’s a trend developing in university admissions that seeks to move away from placing importance solely on students’ academic achievements. Some institutions want to know a bit more about prospective students’ life experiences and insights beyond the classroom, placing more worth in personal essays and video applications than they may have in the past. It’s a way to weed through the vast numbers of students who apply with strong academic records. A spin off result of this is a new field of consultants, who specialize in helping students develop application packages to improve their chances of acceptance. There is, however, concern that this lends a greater advantage to those from wealthier backgrounds who can afford these consultation services.
