This past weekend I was in Whiteway, Trinity Bay, to read at the annual Whiteway Spring Hare. This local festival supports the arts, in particular poetry and fiction, but also includes music, recitations, and other aspects of folk culture from Newfoundland and Labrador. Among the other artists invited were Tom Dawe, Gerry Squires, and Tom Moore.
I chose to read a few poems from Never More There and some new material I’ve not had much of a chance to try on audiences, all of which seemed to go over very well to the group. The town centre was packed, so much so the seating provided, though it seemed ample for such an event, was anything but and many people had to stand at the back. The Spring Hare has grown considerably since I read there a few years back and it’s delightful and encouraging to see such a turn out to support local art and artists. A heartfelt thanks to Jane Prior for helping organize the event and for inviting me to read there.
